Popcorn Fun Bowl

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 2 minutes

Keywords: snack gluten-free low-sodium vegan vegetarian wheat-free popcorn

Sweet:

Ingredients (1 serving)

  • 3 tbsp. unpopped popcorn kernels
  • 1 generous tbsp. tahini
  • 1 tsp. maple syrup
  • 1/2 tsp Chai Spice
  • 2 tbsp. granola
  • 1 tbsp. dairy-free chocolate chips
  • 1 tbsp. dried blueberries

Savoury:

Ingredients (1 serving)

  • 3 tbsp. unpopped popcorn kernels
  • 1 heaping tbsp. tahini
  • 1 tbsp. chopped almonds
  • 1 tbsp. raw pepitas
  • 1 tsp. dried basil
  • 1 tsp. cumin
  • optional: dash of cayenne pepper and tumeric

Instructions

Microwave option

Place kernels in a paper bag, close by folding down the top several times.

Microwave bag on high for 2:30, waiting until ‘pops’ are three seconds apart. Stop the microwave at this point.

Mix tahini and maple syrup together for sweet version. Add tahini to bag with rest of toppings and shake in bag to combine.

Stove top Option

Place a large pot with a well-fitting lid on the stove (this is important, as letting heat escape will cause the kernels to stay un-popped). Turn element on to medium heat and add kernels to pot.

Gently shake the pot, rolling the kernels around to prevent burning.

Wait until the kernels have popped (this usually takes about 5 minutes from the time you turn on the element) and remove pot from heat.

Mix tahini and maple syrup together (for sweet version), and stir in tahini along with the rest of the toppings.

Fill in the blank: My favourite memory involving popcorn is ____.

For me it’s seeing Muppet Treasure island at the movie theatre with my Dad when I was four, and spilling our bucket of popcorn on the ground. Hey Dad, remember that?? Happy weekend :)

  1. Last night? I made huge bowl of popcorn with lime juice and chili pepper and it was kind of awesome. Or any movie I’ve ever seen. I have a weakness for movie theater popcorn!

  2. I can’t even remember the last time I had popcorn…that might have to happen soon. And my best popcorn memory? When my best friend introduced me to the awesomeness that is a bag of movie theatre popcorn with peanut M&Ms dumped in. Seriously delicious.

  3. I just had Earth Balance’s cheddar popcorn…so goooooood.

  4. Yummmmmy– popcorn ranks up there as my favourite food, that’s for sure. Not kidding, I would forego all desserts if it meant I got to make some homemade popcorn.

My favourite popcorn memory would probably be either the first time the little one I babysit saw popcorn pop and fly out of my air popper or in seventh grade when a dozen of us went to the movies by ourselves and were being nutbars. My friend Mathieu threw popcorn at me and it went down the shirt of the poor lady next to me. She screamed in astonishment, and we promptly moved down a row.
Promise I’m no longer a brat. Really ;)
